Scentsy in Forbes

Forbes Magazine named Scentsy number 66 on its 2011 list of America’s 100 Most Promising Companies. The list features “100 privately held up-and-comers with compelling business models, strong management teams, notable customers, strategic partners and precious investment capital.”

Last Week for Bring Back My Bar Voting

Scentsy’s Response Renews Hope

Scentsy, another direct selling company, also focuses fundraising efforts in support of victims of breast cancer. Owners Orville and Heidi Thompson started the Scentsy Family Foundation in 2009 as a vehicle to promote the company’s core value of generosity. “We define that value as ‘contribute more than you take,’ ” says CEO Orville Thompson.

The decision to support the cause of breast cancer awareness was chosen by the foundation, but influenced by the consultants in the field, explains Susan Rowe, Public Relations Manager at Scentsy. The company has supported the cause by giving donations to the National Breast Cancer Foundation in the United States, Rethink Breast Cancer in Canada and Susan G Komen Race for the Cure. To raise the funds donated for the first two organizations, Scentsy created a pink warmer with black accents and lettering that said Love.Life.Hope., and of course, the ribbon. It was offered in the fall 2010 catalog, making it available for six months. “Scentsy made a donation from the sale of each Love.Life.Hope. warmer in the U.S. and Canada,” Rowe says. In the spring of 2011, Scentsy presented the National Breast Cancer Foundation a check for $613,177 and $16,785 (CAD) to Rethink Breast Cancer, surpassing their half-million-dollar goal. “We were touched by the overwhelming response from our consultants and their customers who passionately expressed their desire to support breast cancer education and early detection efforts,” says President Heidi Thompson.

In addition to the warmers, the Thompsons offered to pay the spring 2010 entrance fee for any Scentsy employee and any family member or friend of that employee to participate in the Komen Race for the Cure in Boise, Idaho. “Support for the race was great and the next year, Spring 2011, the Thompsons paid for the entrance fee of employees and matched any funds employees donated as well as the entrance fee of non-Scentsy employees who joined the Scentsy team,” Rowe says. In total, the Scentsy team was able to raise $195,633 for the Komen organization. “Our goal is to raise $1 million for the cause of breast cancer awareness by 2013, and we are almost there,” Rowe adds.

Scentsy consultant Kim Turner tells a story of how easy the warmers were to sell, due to the passion for the cause. One of her customers, Lisa, fell in love with the Love.Life.Hope. warmer for a very personal reason. Just two years earlier, on Christmas Eve, her mother lost her battle with breast cancer. Her mother loved candles and any “smell-good” product. In addition, her favorite saying was Live-Laugh-Love. She says the Scentsy warmer was such a beautiful reminder of her mother. Lisa wished she could purchase a warmer for each of her daughters and nieces as a special Christmas gift, since they regularly participate in awareness walks in memory of her mother. Although she could not afford that many warmers, Turner was determined to help Lisa get those special gifts.

Lisa held a party and both women worked hard to generate sales, so hard that Lisa was able to use her hostess credits to get a warmer for each daughter and niece—and herself. Lisa was extremely appreciative. She says she considers it a special tribute to her mother, and she and her family will be filled with warm memories every time they enjoy the scents from their warmers.

Many families are impacted by breast cancer, and the Thompson family is not exempt. Two months after participating in their first Komen Race for the Cure, Heidi Thompson’s mother, Alice Kalilimoku, was diagnosed with breast cancer. As an active Scentsy consultant, she had raised money for others and was now staring into the face of the very disease she thought only others could get.

Kalilimoku was prompted to get a mammogram after celebrating her 70th birthday in February 2010. “It was just something I felt I should do because it was such a major birthday,” she says. “A few days after the mammogram, the doctor called and said I needed a follow-up visit. After that, I got the call that I had cancer. I found it hard to believe that this was happening to me, but I immediately called family members and urged them to get mammograms as well. Imagine our shock when both a sister and an aunt were diagnosed with cancer within 30 days of me!

“Breast cancer has a high survival rate if caught early, as mine was,” Kalilimoku continues. “After my radiation treatments were over, I told my doctor that I really didn’t think about cancer often because I was so busy with my Scentsy business. He replied, ‘My dear, you don’t have cancer anymore.’ ” She now supports breast cancer awareness so that others with a breast cancer diagnosis can hear those priceless words.

Have Your Car Work for you...

So we have our wonderful window vinyl's and even our magnent on the side of our car. Great for zipping around town and promoting our buisness. Yet we can take it one more step...

A few weeks ago the hubby and I were eating out for lunch. I of course insisted we drive my car so I could advertise. I wore my catalogues on board tshirt and even left a catalogue, sample and buisness card for our waitress.

As we were leaving I noticed a woman looking at my shirt who was getting into a car parked next to ours. So I whipped out a sample/catalogue/buisness card and asked her if she wanted one. She was very excited then mentioned how she saw my car on her way in... LIGHT BULB. If I had a way to leave my catalogues and buisness cards on my advertising machine would I reach the people who just walked by when I was either in eating or when I am out shopping.

So off to Amazon & google shopping searches I go and behold... my find.
I love how I can just leave this in the car and hook it on my window as I'm popping in and out running errands. I bought the smaller brouchure one and it will hold 5 catalogues. Just got it today and decided to try it out when we ran out for about an hour to Wal-mart. Came back and two catalogues had been taken!!!

Make Your Own Scratch Off's

So I put up a link to Megan Sommer-Perfect Parties-Booking Bag Demo 2011-Talking the Talk in an earlier post, and yes this technique of stacking the hostess has worked like a charm for me. The portion of this presentation that I want to talk about are the gift bags.

I have my pretty gift bags all set up and reuse them for my parties. Inside each I have a coupon just as she suggested as an incentive to book a party. Just starting off I found that a lot of the same people are coming to my new parties along with new customers.

So after searching the wonderful Scentsy forum for new ideas I found the suggestion for scratch off tickets. Amazing! I am going to keep my pretty hostess gift bag but I think the next party I am going to change it up a bit and offer everyone a scratch off ticket who is interested in booking a party with me.

I am hoping this will create some new excitement. Ok so I found a great link to some scratch off stickers and the bonus is they have a few free templates to work with. They are even as helpful as giving step by step instructions on how to customize them.

I of course am starting with a template but now that I see the measurements my mind is racing with all kinds of possibilities. Use any incentive you wish and use a few to keep up the excitement and anticipation. Maybe have them all scratch them at once and shout out what they got? Ok, without further adieu here is the link and my examples for you.

New Scentsy "Gift Giving" Program Coming Soon

Scentsy customers and Consultants will be glad to know we are developing a new "gift giving" option to allow customers to send Scentsy products as gifts.



During last year's Spring Sprint, Consultants let us know that sometimes, when a customer would send a gift to a friend unannounced, they would find a Scentsy package they weren't expecting and wonder who sent it.



With the new gift giving order option, customers will be able to send an email to the gift recipient letting them know a gift package is on its way. Customers and Consultants will be able to choose from 20 different email templates, falling under the categories of Birthday, Special Occasion, Holiday, Care and Concern, and General Scentsy Gift.



We expect to launch the gift giving option later this fall and make it available in all Scentsy markets and languages. The print version of the gift giving order form will be downloadable from the Resources tab of the Workstation.

Piece By Piece Update

Scentsy's Spring/Summer 2011 Charitable Cause Warmer, Piece by Piece, has accomplished what it set out to do--and then some!



As you know, Scentsy donated 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of this warmer directly to Autism Speaks™, an international organization which funds global research, spreads awareness, and provides hope to families whose children receive this complex diagnosis. Our ultimate goal was to raise $500,000 for Autism Speaks, and thanks to your outstanding efforts, Scentsy was able to donate a total of $500,696 (USD) and $16,738 (CAD) to the nonprofit organization.

In addition to this donation--which was generated entirely by sales of Piece by Piece--Scentsy is donating all proceeds generated by the sale of the 2011 Convention Commemorative Warmer to Autism Speaks. With this added gift, we will have significantly surpassed our original goal.

We are exceptionally grateful for each of our Consultants and customers who supported this important cause. And we appreciate everyone who wrote in to tell us how this charitable contribution has affected you and your family and friends.

Scentsy Improves Consultant Cancellation Policy

Great news!! Scenty has improved it's consultant cancellation policy which allows more consultants to stay with Scentsy!

As of September, Consultants who do not achieve the requirement of 150 points in PRV during at least one month in a consecutive three-month period will lose their downlines but not their accounts. Their downlines will roll up to their Sponsor in this case. Accounts will be cancelled only if NO PRV is earned within the 6-month period ending on December 31. Scentsy will cancel accounts one time each year on January 1.

This change in policy means those Consultants who love Scentsy but who are not able to achieve 150 in PRV once every three months can continue to sell Scentsy. A Consultant would need to have NO PRV during the fall selling season to be cancelled.

So with that kind of FREEDOM what are you waiting for? The month of August is the month to start your own business! From August 1 through August 31, the consultant starter kit will include Spring/Summer 2011 testers and catalogs AND Fall/Winter 2011 testers and catalogs at no additional cost.

Making Your Own Plug-In Display

This is really simple and if you shop right very inexpensive as well. Here is your shopping list:
  1. Frame
  2. Electrical box
  3. Outlet
  4. Outlet Plate
  5. 6ft extension cord
  6. Flyer (which you can download on left)
First take your frame apart and cut a hole in the back of the board just large enough for the outlet box. I first traced the outlet the used a box cutter to cut the hole.

With wire cutters, cut off the end of the extension cord that has the 3 plugs.

Cut the two wires apart, about 2" down. (Do not damage the cord)

Splice the ends and expose the copper wire

Draw cord through electrical box

Connect wire to outlet. Ribbed wire to the silver screw, plain wire to the gold screw.

Set aside

Put paper and flyer in place, cutting hole for outlet.

Pop the plug through back of frame

Attach electrical box

Put faceplate on

Decorate frame if you wish

What is Scentsy?

Scentsy is a direct selling company that has its headquarters in Meridian, Idaho and is owned by Orville and Heidi Thompson. Direct selling is doing business person to person instead of inside a retail environment. We at Scentsy that are direct selling are called consultants which work as independent contractors. Selling wickless candles, ceramic warmers, and other fragrance products.

So what are wickless candles? Wickless candles are highly fragrant waxes that are sold in either a bar or in a brick. The wax is gently warmed in a ceramic warmer that uses a low watt bulb to release the fragrance into the air. Since the wax is warmed and not burned it holds more fragrance oil than your traditional candle. The best part is that since there is no flame there is no smoke, soot, or lead. You have just found a safer alternative to traditional candles.

There are over 80 fragrances to choose from. Each fragrance might be composed of several types of oils. Our oils exceed current US safety standards and follows consumer and environmental safety guidelines.

Gift Basket

I was recently given the opportunity to donate a basket to an Autism Awareness benefit. This seemed like a no brainer to use the Piece by Piece warmer from Scentsy. This is the cause warmer and all net proceeds are donated to the Autism Speaks organization.

I wanted to use the warmer itself as the showcase for my basket. I knew it would be on display and wanted all who browsed the raffle items to see, touch and take in Scentsy. Scentsy is fairly new to my state and not a lot of people are aware of our warmers. I wanted my contact information to be visible as well.

Here is my basket and instructions on how to complete this easy look.

1.      Remove warmer from box. Setting aside all wrappers and product information.
2.      Remove inserts
3.      Put wrappers and product information in the bottom of the box
4.      Cut Styrofoam inserts to form a base like table to support warmer
5.      Cut a hole in top of Styrofoam to feed warmer cord through
6.      Place warmer base and topper (you can use shrink wrap to secure topper to base)
7.      Use decorative crinkle of choice to hide Styrofoam and cushion warmer
8.      Place bar of your choice in warmer dish (I have my bars clearly marked with my information on a sticker)
9.      Wrap with cellophane
10.  Insert catalogue with business card. (Have catalogue facing forward with back covering back of box. You want the box to clearly display the name of the warmer)
11.  Final touch with ribbon / bow

My Launch Party

It all starts with a goal and the grand opening of your business! Typically your launch party will be held at your home or a nearby friends or relatives home. As for my launch party I choose a nice casual restaurant. My apartment is too small to invite many guests, my friends live an hour away and my family is in another state. To make it easier on everyone I drove up to the location where we had the most friends to have my launch party.

At your launch party you want to take the opportunity to not only share Scentsy but to book other parties and talk about the Scentsy opportunity. I was way too nervous to remember all that and barely made it through the education on what Scentsy is. So here are my suggestions on having a successful launch party.

Create your initial contact list - you'll be surprised just how many people you know. Think outside of the box of just friends and family. Think co-workers, neighbors, acquaintances from your children’s school, activities and even the people you do business with on a daily basis.

Scentsy recommends scheduling your launch party immediately following the arrival of your starter kit. This is because they have outlined easily attainable goals and they do this so you can see how easy it is to have a party that retails at $500.00

Invite your guest in person, email, phone, evite, printed invitations. I even created social networking events to spread the word. Follow up is important and a simple phone call adds a personal touch.

I became a Scentsy consultant after being gifted a warmer and falling in love with the products. Scentsy is amazing. After trying many products from candles to oils in my own home I was always disappointed with the expense of the oils, wicks and the fear of fires.

With Scentsy instead of lighting a wick, the warmers use a low wattage bulb to warm the wax. No smoke, black soot, harmful chemicals, uneven burning, open flames, lead, or hot wax! I no longer worry about my children, pets or home.
